Brief to Write Numeracy Resources for Parents of Deaf Children

Background
The existing NDCS publication ‘Helping your deaf child to learn’ is a popular resource for parents of pre-school and primary aged children, covering literacy and maths at a general level.   Based on feedback NDCS is planning to create new resources for parents of deaf children, to provide them with specific information and support around helping their deaf children to develop numeracy skills. The booklets will build on the general information available in Helping your deaf child to learn.  The booklets will cover information for different age ranges:

·         Early years, age 3-4
·         Key stage 1, age 5-7
·         Key stage 2, age 8-11

Aim
To provide age appropriate information and practical advice to parents on how to help their deaf child develop numeracy skills

This sits within NDCS’ wider strategic objectives of empowering parents and closing the attainment gap between deaf children and other children.

Audience
Primarily parents/carers of deaf children, and the extended family.
Secondary audience is professionals such as Teaching Assistants.

Key topics
We think the resources will need to include:
·         Practical information (for example games and activities parents can do with their deaf child to help with their learning)
·         Information on the challenges their deaf child might be facing in their learning and why
·         Information on how and what deaf children are being taught at school
·         Advice from other parents

We think the following messages should be incorporated into the booklet:
·         Parents play a key role in their child’s education
·         Parents need to be aware of the difficulties their deaf children may experience in developing language and literacy and numeracy skills
·         There are very practical things parents can do to help their child develop these skills

Next steps
Please contact Sarah Handley, sarah.handley@ndcs.org.uk, 020 7549 0463, for more information and how to apply.

Children's Newspaper Opportunity

Work Type: Seeking Freelance Authors with Experience in Children’s Nonfiction

Description: Press4Kids is a producer of children’s news publications, and our initial product will deliver daily news articles to children at the elementary level (grades 2-5). We are looking for freelance writers to join our team of reporters, and we need enthusiastic authors who can engage reluctant readers and help teach them about the world. It’s our mission to inspire children to read while empowering them with the knowledge that they themselves have the ability to change their world.

Because this digital newspaper will be delivering content for very young readers (whereas “news” is often considered an adult concept), we are trying to revolutionize the news experience. We will cover important national and international news, but always with a positive approach. Our on-staff child psychologist vets every story for age-appropriateness, and we need to ensure the safety and security of our readers. We will also, of course, report on whimsical, silly, and kid-friendly current events as well. But every story is based on the latest news – events that occurred within the previous 24 hours.

Job requirements:

We are looking for experienced authors of children’s nonfiction and/or writers who may have been educators at the elementary school level. We need writers who understand how to explain potentially complicated concepts – hurricanes, al Qaeda, the New Hampshire primaries, etc. – with simple and straightforward terms. Our articles are relatively short, but the text must be gripping and clearly organized. It will be the quality of our content that will make us a success, and we will not have time during a day to make substantial edits on a story.

We need writers who understand what level of text is appropriate for our readership. The vocabulary and the complexity of the sentences cannot be too advanced, but we can’t talk down to our readers either. We will not infantilize the world news -- we will expect some level of sophistication – but of course readers at this age may not have much prior knowledge.

While the articles will be assigned by the Editor-in-Chief each morning, Press4Kids also looks to its team of writers to help discover the news each day that will inspire our readers: stories of courage and triumph, human and scientific achievement, kids in the news, even sports stories. The more proactive writers are more likely to get more frequent assignments.

Because we are delivering the news on a daily basis, we need writers who can work in the morning on a very quick deadline. However, we require no long-term commitment for any of our freelancers; because each day brings new assignments, authors can opt out of assignments for days or weeks at a time and then pick up assignments again when available. The project has no end date.

To apply: Please email a resume to info@press4kids.com with a description of why you are qualified to write nonfiction for students. Title your email, “Press4Kids Writer”

Location: Remote
Rate: $75 per short (150-word) article; $100 for the main story of the day; $20/hour copyediting
Contact name: Russell Kahn, Editor-in-Chief
Email: info@press4kids.com

Editing opportuntiy

Work Type: Copyediting and Substantive editing

We are looking for experienced copy and substantive editors in science and non-science disciplines with a core academic background.

We prefer editor profiles that reflect:

Master's/PhD/postdoctoral research experience (studies conducted, papers written/published, papers reviewed, etc.)
Certificate/experience in academic editing, publishing, scientific communication, journal article writing, etc.

Our freelance editors should ensure:
immaculate grammar, punctuation, sentence structure, and word choice
flow, transition, correct terminology, correctness of content, and coherence
appropriate manuscript format* that conforms to academic conventions in terms of citation style, layout, section headings, and tense usage
preservation of the author's intended meaning even in papers where the content requires extensive revision
*Freelance editors also thoroughly format the manuscript as per mentioned journal guidelines when clients opt for our journal formatting service.

We ensure a smooth performance-driven progression curve for our freelance editors with an effective feedback mechanism, which ensures that the expectation mismatch is nearly zero. In the past, the strong professional bonding with our freelance editors has also lead to mutual recommendations--a definite plus factor!

Magazine asks for submissions

I am not sure it's paid work, but, even if not, great exposure...and great for the portfolio. Michele

We are seeking narratives for a new book by Rethinking Schools. The working title is Rethinking Sexism, Gender, and Sexuality.

We invite you to submit a story that relates to teaching and learning about sexism, gender, and sexuality in K-12 schools. We are particularly interested in articles about classroom teaching, curriculum, and youth activism-in and out of school. Students' voices are important; make sure we can hear them!

In order to include diverse voices, we particularly encourage students and educators of color and folks who work in places that are not often associated with LGBTQ activism such as rural schools and schools in the "heartland," although other submissions will be cheerfully considered.

We hope to address gender and sexuality across the curriculum so teachers and students of all disciplines are encouraged to contribute. Other topics may include education organizing/activism, policy matters, and stories that offer historical perspectives with a connection to the present.

Please remember that Rethinking Schools is not an academic journal. We want the writing to be lively, conversational, and to avoid the kind of needless jargon that infects so much education writing. Please approach it as a narrative with a beginning, middle, and end, filled with anecdotes and the voices of teachers, parents, and/or students. Traditional academic/scholarly articles will not be considered for this book.

The best way to understand what works for Rethinking Schools is to read through several issues of the magazine with an eye to how the authors show specifically what they do in the classroom and how they integrate information about the topic into the article. Specific examples you might want to look at include "It's OK to Be Neither" by Melissa Bollow Tempel and "When the Gender Boxes Don't Fit," by Ericka Sokolower-Shain. As a model of writing for the magazine, see anything by Linda Christensen.

Before you begin writing, check out the writers guidelines.

Please send submissions electronically (Word.doc) to jody@rethinkingschools.org. We are unable to read submissions of more than 4,000 words, and are generally interested in articles that are substantially shorter.

Many of the articles in the book will also appear in Rethinking Schools magazine. The initial submission deadline is January 31, 2013.

If you have questions, don't hesitate to contact Jody Sokolower, managing editor of Rethinking Schools.

Opportunity for Social Studies Content Specialists

The GED® Testing Service is seeking content experts in the academic area of Social Studies to participate in extended response rangefinding.

We are inviting experts in Social Studies Education to participate in the second of four rangefinding meetings. Reviewers may participate in up to four rangefinding meetings per year, and most meetings will last 3-5 days.
Rangefinding is a process through which content-area experts examine test-takers’ work to determine how well the responses fulfill the criteria of the scoring rubric. In this way, we are able to establish a range of responses that can be used to train the scorers of our extended response (essay-type) items.
Qualifications
• Content experts will be secondary-level teachers of Science or Social Studies, and/or graduate students in Secondary Education programs with a focus on one of these two content areas
• Qualified reviewers will have a bachelor’s degree or higher in their content area or related educational field.
• Recent classroom teaching experience and familiarity with Common Core State Standards or other career- and college-readiness content standards is strongly preferred.

Qualified individuals may apply to participate by submitting a resume and letter of interest to Bridget Olson, Social Studies Content Specialist. Email address: bridget.olson@GEDtestingservice.com
Second GED Rangefinding Dates: Monday, November 12 – Friday, November 16, 2012
Travel Day: Sunday, November 11
Location: San Antonio, Texas
Reviewers will be paid at a rate of $400 per day. In addition, airfare, lodging, meals, and travel expenses will be covered. Upon confirmation of participation, we will provide meeting logistics and instructions for booking travel.
Important Background Information:
The movement toward more rigorous national standards for high school education and the changing national conversation on what is needed to be career-and college-ready has a direct impact on the GED® test. The GED® testing program is being reinvented in order to align with this new direction.
While national career- and college-readiness standards serve as the benchmarks for the GED® content frameworks, we have specifically identified assessment targets that are most relevant to and predictive of success in a variety of career and post-secondary pathways, especially considering the wide range of adult learners who comprise the GED® test-taking population. The Social Studies assessment must focus on core competencies that strongly predict career- and college- readiness. Additionally, the items aligned with the new GED® assessment targets must represent a full breadth of social studies content. They will be designed to measure a continuum of ability levels commensurate with those demonstrated by students exiting a traditional high school course of study as well as those entering post-secondary coursework or job training programs.

GED® Testing Service is an Equal Opportunity Employer M/F/V/D, and a member of E-Verify.

Organic chemistry writing gig

Hi all...this is from a colleague...have forwarded a portion of what she sent to me...please contact her directly (contact info follows the announcement). Thx. Michele

One of the major educational publishers has just come to me and requested that we bid on a small Org Chem project. They are authoring 30 new online questions for a chapter on Pericyclic Reactions.
The questions are either algorithmically-generated or interactive versions of the ones that appear in the textbook. The client would provide us with the textbook and the solutions manual; we need to do a content QA of the questions. That involves both verifying that all buttons work and links are correct within the question, and that the content is accurate (correct answers are accepted; incorrect answers are rejected).

Given the content, I need the person who reviews the online questions to be 100% comfortable with the material because we need to be looking for common errors and places where students can enter equivalent values but get marked wrong, and that can’t be done effectively by someone who is teaching or re-teaching him or herself the material.

The questions will be batched to us from late November through December. The work will likely pay between $7 and 10 per question, including checking 5 iterations of the algorithmic items. I will provide a brief training session with the reviewer so s/he is comfortable with the process and what to do/look for.

Instructional designer?

HI all...I want to submit a proposal to an organization -- one element of it is the development of an online, interactive course...while there is a template (and I might be able to do the work), I want to partner with someone who has done this in the past. Again, it's just a proposal. Am happy to share more details...proposal is due Aug. 17th so we need to discuss soon. Thx. Michele

Part Time Temporary Math Assessment Associate

    The Achievement Network

    POSITION ANNOUNCEMENT:
Part Time Temporary Math Assessment Associate
    Position is available immediately
    Location: Boston, MA

    Organizational Overview:
Top performing low-income schools across the country are demonstrating that the achievement gap can be closed. One common practice in these schools is how they effectively use student achievement data to identify gaps in student learning and then relentlessly target their teaching to catch up students who are falling behind.  Founded in Boston in 2005, The Achievement Network (ANet), an entrepreneurial non-profit organization on the cutting edge of the education reform movement, is designed to help schools achieve excellence and dramatically improve student achievement.   ANet has been the recipient of the prestigious Investing In Innovation (I3) grant from the federal government; was awarded the New Schools Venture Fund “Organization of the Year” in 2011; and was selected to join the Clinton Global Initiative’s 100K in 10 movement, which seeks to recruit, prepare, and support 100,000 excellent STEM teachers over the coming 10 years.

ANet’s comprehensive solution builds partner schools’ capacity to use data effectively in their schools and increase student achievement. There are three major components that make up ANet’s partnership with schools.  First, we provide standards-aligned quarterly assessments and user-friendly data reports to determine which standards students are mastering and which standards students are struggling to comprehend. Second, ANet provides intensive coaching to help schools use the data effectively to action plan and re-teach concepts students have not yet mastered.  And third, ANet facilitates a peer network of leaders and teachers for best practice sharing and collaboration to accelerate improvement in schools across the network.

ANet currently serves 252 charter and district schools educating over 60,000 students in Massachusetts, Washington, D.C., New Orleans, Newark, Chicago, Tennessee, and New York City.  ANet schools have increased the percentage of their students reaching proficiency on state year-end summative tests; these outcomes outpace gains made by the states in which we work, often by twice as much.

    Position Overview:
We are seeking a Part Time Temporary Math Assessment Associate to assist the Math Assessment Team with the research, development, design, and production of standards-based interim assessments in Math to be administered in elementary and middle schools. The Associate will help to manage the content for our supplementary materials for schools, such as our quiz tool.

    Responsibilities:
Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

    • Collaborate with the Assessment Team to ensure ANet interim exams align with state standards and rigor to measure student performance in grades 3 – 8
      • Research and analyze state standards and released items
      • Create items for a given standard
      • Edit assessments to ensure assessments are a good approximate for the state assessment
      • Aid in the creation of Math assessments by creating items, selecting items, editing assessments, reviewing questions and all other aspects of assessment design

    • Provide Math subject matter expertise
      • Support ANet staff with assessment use in schools by providing coaches with information regarding assessment design decisions
      • Evaluate items created for given Math standards to ensure items are grade level appropriate, rigorous and are error free

    • Conduct research on Common Core Standards
      • Conduct research around new Common Core national standards and their connection to existing state standards

    • Aid in the production of assessments for at least one geographic Network
      • Select items to be used on a given assessment
      • Review assessments to ensure all components are represented

    • Contribute to the overall success of The Achievement Network
      • Manage the content of ANet’s supplementary materials for schools (e.g., ANet Quiz Tool)

    Required Skills, Experiences and Competencies:
In order to be successful in this role, ideal candidate should demonstrate the following:
    • Excellent education credentials and school experience:  2+ years of standards-based teaching, preferably in grades 3 – 8; experience with or study of assessment creation and design a plus
    • Excellent attention to detail
    • Ability to meet deadlines
    • Comprehensive understanding of what students must know and be able to demonstrate in different grade levels/subject areas: In order to develop items and design tests and to serve as resource person for ANet staff and school leaders; Grades 3 – 8, Math preferred
    • Comfort with working in an entrepreneurial, fast-paced, highly collaborative and team-oriented environment: With a desire to contribute to a growing organization, outstanding project management skills and initiative
    • Belief in The Achievement Network’s mission and strategy: Most importantly, a passionate commitment to and a sense of urgency for the support of urban schools, along with a belief that all students can achieve at high levels
